Axiom #1

The Dad Network axioms are ‘dad-hood’ proverbs. They pinpoint key principles of dad-hood and refine them down to unforgettable soundbites of wisdom that can be called upon instantly to inform a critical decision. And, as we all know, being a dad is full of critical decisions!

The only rule is… there are no rules!

From my experience antenatal classes spend the majority of time talking about the labour and birth. It’s as if the labour is some sort of powerful oracle that we must all spend hours upon on hours talking about when in reality, it’s probably no longer than 24 hours (apologies if yours was) and 9 times out of 10 it was nothing like the antenatal classes portrayed it out to be.

We spent hours packing the bag with the essential smelly oils, the flannels, the massage thing, the cooling spray, the spare shorts etc etc and all we used was 1 nappy, 1 baby grow and a hair bobble! Did we stick to our birth plan? No! That’s 20 minutes of my life I won’t ever get back!

What I’m trying to say here is that there are no rules. There isn’t a set way of doing things. There isn’t ‘the best thing.’ There’s no 1 answer. Get the point? If not, here’s some examples:

  • During labour your best friend had a tenns machine and water birth and said it ‘got her through the pain.’ We tried it – it didn’t help 1 bit!
  • Our friends baby slept 11pm – 7am from 4 weeks and had no routine what so ever. Our other friends have a military routine and their baby sleeps from 11pm – 7am. Do the math!

Hold in your head at all cost, there are no rules. What works for one person and one baby might not work for you and yours so work it out for yourself and don’t stress about it along the way.
