Dear Son, I’d like to know…

Dear Son

Dear Son,

I was watching you this morning playing and learning about the world and I thought to myself, ‘there’s a lot I’d like to know.’

I’d like to know what your first word is going to be.

I’d like to know what your face will look like when you’re 10.

I’d like to know if your clothes feel nice on your skin.

I’d like to know which toy is your favourite.

I’d like to know if when I make stupid voices¬†at you, you like it or find it annoying!

I’d like to know if you’ll enjoy your first day at school.

I’d like to know you’re favourite food.

I’d like to know if you’re going to like sports.

I’d like to know what colour your hair will be.

I’d like to know where each new step is going to take you.

I’d like to know if you like your bedroom.

I’d like to know who your best friend is going to be.

I’d like to know if you’ll be good at maths.

I’d like to know how you’ll cope making friends.

I’d like to know if you can sing.

I’d like to know what makes you laugh.

I’d like to know your favourite colour.

I’d like to know if you’re going to be naughty.

I’d like to know your strengths and weaknesses.

I’d like to know what you’ll get up to when I’m not there.

I’d like to know if you’re safe at all times.

I’d like to know your hobbies.

I’d like to know if you’ll work hard at school.

I’d like to know how you’ll navigate the hazards of secondary school packed with peer pressure, adolescence and friendship issues.

I’d like to know if you’ll go to university. (So I can start saving up.)

I’d like to know who your first girlfriend is and how many you’ll have consequently.

I’d like to know just how drunk you will get at some stage.

I’d like to know what career you’ll choose.

I’d like to know what your political views will be.

I’d like to know if you’ll ever get ill.

I’d like to know where you’ll end up living.

I’d like to know if you’ll have kids of your own.

I’d like to know whether you enjoy your job or not.

I’d like to know if you’ll meet the girl of your dreams.

I’d like to know if you’ll be happy with your life.

I’d like to know what bones you’re going to break on the way.

I’d like to know if you’ll see me as a help or hindrance.

I’d like to know whether you’ll be proud of me as your dad.

I’d like to know if you know I love you.

The reality is though, that yes, I do desperately want to know all these things, but the adventure of finding them all out as life moves on is far better than knowing it all at once.

There is 1 thing I’d like you to know though…

Know that I love you.
